Guest post: A love-hate relationship

My friend and coworker Michelle McNickle has written a guest bagel review! You can also find Michelle over at her own blog, Coffee Dates and Hangovers.

Like Betsy, I am a bagel girl — I can easily down an everything bagel, toasted with butter, every day for breakfast and can even end up toasting myself a second bagel as a midnight snack, all within a 24-hour period. If it weren’t for my somewhat newfound hobby of running, I’m convinced my hips would be the width of Texas, thanks to all the bagels I can easily consume within a week.

So, you would think I’d have a better sense of the bagel “scene” in our little city of Portland, Maine. And although Betsy has introduced me to my most recent go-to bagel shop (i.e. The Works), it pains me to admit you’ll sometimes find me slumming it down on the corner of Market Street.

Case and point: this morning. I settled for a Dunkin’ Donuts bagel.

I know, I know. Dunkin Donuts is equal to the McDonald’s of the bagel world. But sometimes, I can’t say no to a medium iced coffee — black, of course — followed by a Dunkin’ bagel with an inch of cream cheese topping it off.

Today, it was a multi-grain bagel. I usually opt for a poppy-seed one, but for some reason, I’m convinced anything with the word “grain” in it is moderately healthy. The bagel itself was half burnt, still somewhat “soggy,” and had a poor cream cheese-to-half-bagel ratio.

Why do I still venture to Dunkin Donuts, while there are multiple coffee shops — and their bagels — lining the streets of Portland? Probably because I’m a creature of habit, and Dunkin’ Donuts was anywhere and everywhere around Connecticut and Boston growing up. If there’s one thing for certain, though, it’s that my bagel standards have been raised (thanks mostly to Betsy), and my love-hate relationship with Dunkin’ will hopefully come to an end soon.
